Caleb Roy: A Modern Management Philosopher

 The intermediate manager needs to coordinate the interdependent group operations and manage group performance.  The intermediate managers should also be flexible and versatile for better situation analysis to recognize the best management approach and switch efficiently from one style to other.  They are expected to train the front-line officers to be confident and establish the essential guidelines for the subordinate managers.

The intermediate managers need economic, political and social understanding of policing operations.  They need to realize the organizational priorities and should communicate the operational tasks efficiently to whom they supervise.



Knowledge of Modern Management Philosophies

Caleb Roy took the concentrated program offered at Humber College which was equivalent to the Police Foundations Diploma.   The comprehensive program covered the latest developments for managing inside a policing environment, shared the ideal practices through presentations by professors and other students in and outside the classroom.   Caleb Roy believed that a robust academic base will improvise the front line experience and enhance the learning process for trends and methodologies.

While attending class at Humber College Caleb Roy was assigned a new group of students and assignment.   When the group discussed the assignment of various responsibilities, they could not agree completely on the individually assigned tasks.   It was a stressful and uncomfortable situation.   Caleb Roy recognized the tension and took it upon himself to assign the task to the group members, as an excellent team player.   Everyone agreed and it restored normalcy among the group.

 Links Operational Tasks to Service Goals and Objectives

 Caleb Roy always explained the bigger picture and how it was essential practically when presenting updates and information to the platoon.

For better understanding, Caleb Roy believed that they should stay updated with the ongoing local issues through media and social relations.

The efficient functioning of the Auxiliary Unit was a priority for the Service. Caleb Roy systematized an information session and invited other police services to the Headquarters for information-sharing and networking.
